Keeping Pets Fit & Healthy
With Proper Nutrition

Pet Nutrition CounselingAny sudden change in your cat or dog’s eating habits or a sudden increase or decrease in weight could be symptomatic of many underlying diseases. A good balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats is essential for maintaining your pet’s overall health.

The nutritional needs of our animal family members vary depending on their age, weight, and activity level. At Odyssey Veterinary Care, we are happy to answer your questions about the dietary needs of your canine and feline friends and regularly include nutritional counseling as part of our pet wellness exams. Our veterinarians can recommend a diet that fits your companion critter’s nutritional needs—or feel free to bring in the nutritional content of your existing diet for them to review during your wellness exam.

Pet obesity is also a growing problem that puts the health of your canine comrade or feline friend at risk. Obesity contributes to a host of pet health conditions including osteoarthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, breathing problems, kidney and heart disease, and a life expectancy shortened by up to 20%.

How do you know if your critter companion is overweight?

During his or her wellness exam, your veterinarian or technician will review your pet’s body condition scale (BCS), which ranges from one (extremely underweight) to nine (obese). Your pet will be scaled during each wellness exam to assist you with maintaining or making adjustments to help your critter reach his or her ideal body weight.

The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention offers the following body condition score cards to help you determine if there is just a little too much of your pampered pooch or cuddly kitty to love. Be sure to discuss your concerns with your veterinarian before making any drastic changes to your pet’s diet.

Life Stage Nutrition

As your pet grows and changes, so do his or her nutritional needs. Puppies and kittens {Link to Puppy & Kitten Wellness} need food to support their growing bodies and high activity levels. Different breeds of dogs may benefit from size-specific diets designed for toy, giant, working, or obesity-prone breeds. The dietary needs of senior pets {Link to Senior Pet Care} may require special foods for health issues, weight management, or slowing activity levels. At Odyssey Veterinary Care, we also carry a full line of prescription foods designed to treat conditions such as kidney and bladder disease, obesity, diabetes, joint, and heart disease.

VPI Pet Insurance offers an informative article on the changing nutritional needs of dogs and cats: Pet Nutrition: Life Stages.

Odyssey Veterinary Care carries a variety of prescription diets including:

  • Hills Feline and Canine Prescription Diets
  • Iams Feline and Canine Prescription Diets
  • Purina Feline and Canine Prescription Diets

Diets that are not stocked regularly can be special ordered (we place orders on Tuesday mornings and they arrive on Wednesday mornings). Other prescription diet brands (such as Royal Canin) can be ordered from our online pharmacy.

Odyssey goes above and beyond my expectations, and truly cares about my dog. We will always come back to Odyssey and highly recommend it to anyone who asks!
— Meagan

Dr. Bruss is great—he is very kind and caring. He called us several times to explain our options and didn’t pressure us to make a particular decision.
— Anne

My dog sees Dr. Stokes for his vet care and she is the best vet ever. She understands my dog’s unique needs and I highly recommend them!
— Debra

No matter which vet we've seen, they’ve always been loving and compassionate whether we were there just for yearly vaccinations or for something a bit more serious.
— Melanie

I am in love with all of the staff at this facility. If I could, I would want to be treated there, but sadly, they only take the four legged types...
— Terri

Wouldn’t go anywhere else! I feel surrounded by people that love animals as much as I do. Wouldn’t change a thing.
— Powder78

Services are very reasonably priced and we've never felt like we had any unnecessary procedures or products pushed on us. we really feel that we can trust Dr. Bruss and Odyssey Veterinary Care with our cats’ health.
— Onion Girl

Dr. stokes has seen our family through kitten to senior cat, puppy and loss of dog, new puppy and everything in the middle! We think the care our animals get here is top notch!
— Courtney

Great people, great care! You've all made such a difference in my life and Abby's too. Thanks Odyssey Staff!
— June

When they prescribed my dog eye drops for an infection, they gave me the instructions and then called me within a 48 hour period to ask me how the medication was going and if I had any questions.
— Debra

They are very friendly and very thorough. The dog loves them, and she’s shy, so that’s a good thing. We have always had a lot of confidence in what they have told us.
— Sandra

They happily accommodate our special request to see our big dogs in their fenced back yard, since our 100-pound German Shepherd gets nervous in a small examination room.
— Peter

We bring our dog to Odyssey Vet Clinic and will continue to do so as long as we live in this area. They are the best vets we’ve ever had.
— David

They are very friendly, and they always remind you of when your appointments are. They are the top veterinary hospital in Madison. They are very good.
