November: Zack has always got your back... and snacks

What better advocate for the month of eating than a Labradore Retreiver?!  Zack the black lab is a very handsome, older gentleman.  He is an outgoing fellow.  He must great everyone in the room to ensure they have had the honor of giving him some pets.  And perhaps to see if they might have any extra nibbles to scarf down.  He is just the bounciest, charmingest, sweetest guy.

Labrador Retrievers hail from the island of Newfoundland, off the northeastern Atlantic coast of Canada. Originally called St. John's dogs, after the capital city of Newfoundland, Labs served as companions and helpers to the local fishermen beginning in the 1700s.

Although the name might suggest Labrador Retrievers came from Labrador, Canada, the breed actually originated in Newfoundland in the 1500s. At the time, small water dogs were bred with Newfoundlands to create a breed called the St. John’s Water Dog or Lesser Newfoundland. They were seen in action by English nobles in the early 1800's and brought across the big pond.  They rose in popularity as sporting dogs and gained the name Labrador through the English (despite their Newfoundland origins).  They have since remained one of the most popular breeds!

1.)    What makes you go absolutely bonkers?

When my tiny brother Bentley barks at me I go bonkers! He doesn't like it when I bark so then he barks at me. Bentley is a dachshund so he doesn't stop barking...sometimes I have to roll him over with my nose.

2.)    What is your favorite thing that only you and your human do together?

I taught my humans to rub my belly every time I roll over. They learned quickly but sometimes they don't notice that I rolled over. It makes me sad when I don't get my belly rub because it's my favorite thing! I also really like getting my nails trimmed by my beauty consultants at Odyssey!

3.)    How did you and your family meet?

Well, this is an interesting story. It all started when my farmer owner let me loose. I though he loved me but I guess he didn't. It made me sad. Me and my friend Bob were on the run for a while. Bob was really old so I took care of him. I made sure he had food and helped him find water. Thankfully, we weren't loose for long! We were found by the Iowa County Humane Society. My mom saw us on the Humane Society website. She read all about me and Bob and she really felt bad for us and fell in love with us! She knew my dad loved yellow labs and Bob was a yellow lab.

So, she told my dad they were going to go to the humane society to meet a yellow lab. She didn't tell him that we were a bonded pair and if they took Bob, they had to take me too. When we all met in a little room, dad fell in love with Bob and then mom sprung it on him that I was part of the deal. Mom was a little worried, but when dad met me...he fell in LOVE!  Needless to say, we've been together ever since. My friend Bob had to go to the Rainbow Bridge. I was sad for a little while, but I know I'll see him again. Until I do, I'm giving mom and dad enough love for me and Bob!
