State-of-the-Art
Veterinary Laser Surgery

Laser SurgeryAt Odyssey Veterinary Care, our focus and passion is providing the latest advances in veterinary care to our patients and the people who love them. CO2 laser technology has emerged as a breakthrough medical tool that minimizes the negative effects of surgical procedures and expedites cell repair and overall patient recovery.

In laser surgery, a very intense beam of highly focused light is used instead of a scalpel to cut through tissue. Lasers are highly efficient at making very precise incisions, which makes them ideal for surgery of the face, skin, oral cavity, ears, and urinary and anal areas, as well as for major procedures like mastectomies and amputations. As the laser cuts, it seals small blood vessels and nerve endings around the incision, which means less bleeding, swelling, and post-operative pain for your pet.

Benefits of laser surgery include:

  • Reduced bleeding and swelling
  • Minimized pain
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Quicker recovery time

Q: How are laser declaws different from traditional declaws?

A: Cats have three bones in their toes. During a declaw procedure, a veterinarian removes the claw by taking off the end section of the last bone as well as the nail, which prevents re-growth. In traditional declaws, this section of bone is amputated with a scalpel. This can result in a significant bleeding, swelling, and post-operative pain. In laser declaws, the claw is removed using a beam of light, which automatically seals blood vessels and nerve ending as it cuts, resulting in less surgical bleeding, inflammation, and a shorter/less painful recovery.

Q: What kinds of dogs benefit from nares surgeries (aka doggie nose jobs)?

A: Brachycephalic breeds like pugs, bulldogs, lhasa apsos, Boston terriers, and shih-tzus often have very narrowed respiratory tracks that can significantly affect their comfort, activity level, health, and safety. Brachycephalic syndromes includes stenotic nares (very small nasal openings), thickened soft palate in the back of the throat, everted saccules (membranes that contribute to airway obstruction), and undersized trachea for the size of the dog. This combination causes difficulty in breathing and snoring (not so cute at 2 a.m.), but most importantly restricts the pet’s physical ability. These dogs also have a much higher risk of heat stroke since canines rely heavily on movement of air through the respiratory track for body cooling.

While our short-nosed friends may be anatomically disadvantaged, there is a very safe and effective laser procedure that can dramatically increase airway flow in these adorable flat faced pups. By removing a small amount of tissue in the nasal opening, the intake of air with each breath is increased and the negative pressure in the back of the throat is greatly reduced. By doing this procedure when the dog is young, the risk of progressive thickening of the palate is decreased and heat tolerance is increased. In addition to the safety benefit, dogs that have nares surgeries snore less and will be able to run and play much more comfortably.

The procedure is quick and has a normal cosmetic appearance and immediate recovery with very minimal post-op complications. This corrective surgery can be done at any age but has the most significant long-term effects when performed on young dogs.

Odyssey goes above and beyond my expectations, and truly cares about my dog. We will always come back to Odyssey and highly recommend it to anyone who asks!
— Meagan

Dr. Bruss is great—he is very kind and caring. He called us several times to explain our options and didn’t pressure us to make a particular decision.
— Anne

My dog sees Dr. Stokes for his vet care and she is the best vet ever. She understands my dog’s unique needs and I highly recommend them!
— Debra

No matter which vet we've seen, they’ve always been loving and compassionate whether we were there just for yearly vaccinations or for something a bit more serious.
— Melanie

I am in love with all of the staff at this facility. If I could, I would want to be treated there, but sadly, they only take the four legged types...
— Terri

Wouldn’t go anywhere else! I feel surrounded by people that love animals as much as I do. Wouldn’t change a thing.
— Powder78

Services are very reasonably priced and we've never felt like we had any unnecessary procedures or products pushed on us. we really feel that we can trust Dr. Bruss and Odyssey Veterinary Care with our cats’ health.
— Onion Girl

Dr. stokes has seen our family through kitten to senior cat, puppy and loss of dog, new puppy and everything in the middle! We think the care our animals get here is top notch!
— Courtney

Great people, great care! You've all made such a difference in my life and Abby's too. Thanks Odyssey Staff!
— June

When they prescribed my dog eye drops for an infection, they gave me the instructions and then called me within a 48 hour period to ask me how the medication was going and if I had any questions.
— Debra

They are very friendly and very thorough. The dog loves them, and she’s shy, so that’s a good thing. We have always had a lot of confidence in what they have told us.
— Sandra

They happily accommodate our special request to see our big dogs in their fenced back yard, since our 100-pound German Shepherd gets nervous in a small examination room.
— Peter

We bring our dog to Odyssey Vet Clinic and will continue to do so as long as we live in this area. They are the best vets we’ve ever had.
— David

They are very friendly, and they always remind you of when your appointments are. They are the top veterinary hospital in Madison. They are very good.
